Variants§

§

Authenticated

The credentials are correct and fresh.

§

Stale

The credentials are correct and the nonce has expired.

Challenge again with stale=true (RFC 7616 §3.3). The distinction is the whole reason stale exists: a client told stale=true re-computes and re-sends by itself, and one told only “401” prompts a human for a password that was never wrong.

§

Rejected(Reason)

The credentials are not correct, or not this server’s to accept.
